The management and operation of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) Horse Unit is located at the H.H. Levick Animal Research Center. Teach advanced equine training and riding courses and leadership of the nationally recognized MSU IHSA Equestrian Team.

Salary Grade:  14

Department Profile:

The Animal and Dairy Sciences Department currently houses approximately 625 undergraduate students, 40 graduate students, and 26 faculty, both on the main campus and at Research and Extension Centers throughout Mississippi. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science degree with concentrations in Pre-Vet/Science, Pre-Vet Med Tech, Production Management, Business and Industry and newly approved Food Science. Master of Science, Master of Agriculture, and Ph.D. Degrees are offered in Animal and Dairy Sciences through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Department conducts teaching, research, and extension activities on the 1,200-acre H.H. Leveck Animal Research Center and 1,200-acre Bearden Research Dairy. The Department’s 15,000 sq. ft. Meat Science and Muscle Biology Laboratory was completed in 2018 and houses state-of-the-art equipment to harvest and fabricate carcasses and process them into wholesale and retail cuts. The new Animal and Dairy Sciences building opened in 2019. This 38,000-square-foot facility houses three teaching areas, including a teaching laboratory and distance education-equipped classrooms, as well as research laboratories and animal rooms for teaching and research needs. The South Farm is home to our new Livestock Evaluation Laboratory, opening in Fall 2025. Our research and teaching herds include dairy, beef, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits and swine on the Mississippi State University main campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Supervise and complete activities associated with the care of the horse herd, including general management of breeding animals.
2. Responsible for the care of the horse herd, including feeding, foaling, health and foot care, record keeping, registration, billing, horse donation and sales, ordering of supplies, maintenance of pastures, fences, buildings and minor repair of equipment.
3. Supervise students and be responsible for hiring of student employees and for time reports and records of the personnel under his/her supervision.
4. Assist and support faculty with instructional courses and research activities.
5. Coordinate with the H.H. Leveck Animal Research Center Facilities Manager to perform duties in other areas as needed.
6. Teach advanced equine training and riding courses.
7. Duties include serving as an equestrian team coach, including holding practice with undergraduate students, traveling to competitions, and hosting equestrian contests.
8. This position will be under the direct supervision of the faculty liaison for the Horse Unit and the Department Head.
Shifts will vary. The successful candidate will be expected to work weekends and holidays as needed, and the job requires flexible scheduling.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree in animal and dairy science or a closely related field.
Licensure: Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience riding and handling young horses. Experience instructing undergraduate courses and coaching students. Ability to palpate, ultrasound and artificially inseminate mares.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Candidates must have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to foster a collaborative and collegial atmosphere. Knowledge of equine farm operation and the ability to manage people.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.

FULL-TIME FACULTY DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL DAIRY & VETERINARY SCIENCE

OVERVIEW

The Department of Animal Dairy and Veterinary Science at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a Lecturer in Equine Science and Management position. This is a 9-month academic year (AY) faculty position with an assignment of 95% Teaching (including instruction and applied/clinical responsibilities) and 5% Service in the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (QANR).

Excellence in teaching, mentorship, and applied instruction is central to the mission of ADVS. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate instruction in areas such as basic horsemanship, horse production and management, equine evaluation and equine industry practices. Teaching assignments will align with departmental needs and the candidate's expertise.

Instruction will occur primarily at the USU Sam Skaggs Family Equine Education Center, which includes a heated indoor arena (105’ × 300’), an outdoor arena (150' × 300'), breeding and foaling facilities, stall barns, and modern classroom space. The Center maintains a herd of 80 to 100 horses that support instruction in riding, reproduction, training, and equine-assisted services.

In addition to teaching and mentoring students, the successful candidate will contribute to the day-to-day operations of the teaching program, including coordinating horse use and supporting facility operations in collaboration with the Equine Center Director. The position includes advising the Western Equestrian Team and requires flexibility for occasional evening, weekend, and travel commitments.

The equine program is experiencing sustained growth and evolution, and this position offers the opportunity to contribute to the continued refinement and future direction of equine teaching and student experiences at USU.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching (95%)

• Deliver high-quality instruction in classroom, arena, barn, and other applied settings in areas such as horsemanship, horse production, equine management, and the equine industry.
• Mentor undergraduate students and support their development of technical skills and industry readiness.
• Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement of the equine science and management program.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and program leadership to support safe and effective use of horses in teaching.
• Coordinate with the Equine Center Director on horse care, scheduling, and facility use to support instructional needs.

Service (5%)

• Participate in service activities at the department, college, and university levels, as well as professional service in relevant veterinary or equine associations.
• Support shared governance, student clubs, and outreach activities aligned with equine science and management.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in animal science, equine science, equine management, or a related field OR equivalent professional experience in the equine industry demonstrating comparable knowledge and competency.
• Demonstrated experience working with horses, including riding, training and handling a range of temperaments and training levels.
• Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and student mentorship.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
• Ability to obtain a valid Utah driver's license.
• Basic proficiency with standard instructional and communication tools (e.g., PowerPoint, learning management systems).

Preferred Qualifications

• Five or more years of professional experience in the equine industry.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
• Experience teaching in classroom, laboratory, or applied settings.
• Experience developing or delivering online or hybrid instruction.
• Demonstrated engagement with the equine industry and/or professional organizations (e.g., AQHA, NRCHA, NCHA, NRHA, IHSA, USEF).
• Experience coaching or advising student teams.

HUNT SEAT INSTRUCTOR AND VARSITY COACH

Position Summary
This role is responsible for developing and overseeing the hunt seat riding program at Albion College, including teaching lessons, coaching the intercollegiate team, maintaining the horse herd, and conditioning horses. The position also works closely with the Admissions team to recruit prospective students and assists with daily operations at the Held Equestrian Center. Independent judgment, sensitivity, and confidentiality are essential. A commitment to working with individuals from a variety of identities, cultures, and backgrounds is required.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Experience in USHJA and USEF competitions required

  • IHSA experience preferred

  • Significant experience in multi-discipline riding and horse care required

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop and manage the hunt seat riding program, including horse health, training, facilities, and equine business management

  • Instruct students at varying skill levels in proper technique, form, and safety

  • Train and condition student-athletes for intercollegiate competition; plan practices and coach at contests

  • Grow the hunt seat program toward nationally recognized standing

  • Foster a positive, academically successful student-athlete experience; monitor academic performance and ensure IHSA/NCAA compliance

  • Manage team budget and A-Club account

  • Build and maintain relationships with hunt seat alumni

  • Participate in community relations activities, clinics, and fundraising

  • Manage and maintain the college's horse herd, including procurement, conditioning, and rehabilitation

  • Provide and oversee horse care, grooming, and routine medical treatments

  • Assist in planning and operating shows, clinics, and intercollegiate events

  • Develop and implement a student-athlete recruitment and retention plan

  • Handle administrative duties including scheduling, reporting, travel planning, and equipment maintenance

  • Transport horses and students to/from shows by truck/trailer

  • Fill in for on-call status for horse care as needed

Working Conditions

This is a full-time, on-site position with a flexible schedule. Work takes place both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Physical requirements include standing for up to eight hours, lifting 10–50 lbs., and pushing/pulling up to 150 lbs. Exposure to allergens, stable odors, and large animals is expected. A valid Michigan driver's license (or eligibility to obtain one) is required; a CDL may be needed.
