This section contains important information and updates for IHSA Coaches and Assistant Coaches. The Quick Start Guide gives you valuable step-by-step instructions to help you manage your team. Your Regional President will provide specific directions to follow and additional support needed.
Mandatory for all IHSA coaches each year:
SAFE SPORT CERTIFICATION: Safe Sport Training is available for free to all USEF members. If you are not a USEF member, you can join with a $25 USEF membership to access and take Safe Sport Training.
CONCUSSION EDUCATION: All Coaches are also required to provide verification of Concussion Education.

The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association is committed to good sportsmanship and developing healthy environments for competition. We believe the opportunity to represent your institution as a member of the IHSA is a privilege, which is accompanied by the responsibility to behave with dignity in and outside of the show ring. Individuals associated an IHSA member institution are expected to conduct themselves in a such a manner to represent the highest level of honor, observe the principles of good sportsmanship, good horsemanship, honesty, fairness, dignity, civility, and respect.
The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association does not condone unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of the student rider/athlete, coach, administrator, spectator; or any individual associated with a member institution. The Code of Conduct is designed for the promotion and protection of the integrity of the intention of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association.
IT IS THE REPSONSIBILITY OF THE INTERCOLLEGIATE HORSE SHOW ASSOCIATION MEMBER INSTITUTIONS:
1. To develop strategies to educate rider athletes, coaches, parents, and community members about sportsmanship, good horsemanship skills, ethical conduct, and fairness within the sport.
2. To stress the values derived from competing fairly.
3. To treat other teams with respect and dignity.
4. To be cordial and courteous to other teams, team members, IHSA officials, horse show officials, horse providers, and barn management staff.
5. To respect the integrity and judgement of the horse show officials.
6. To help coaches and rider athletes understand and respect the rules and regulations of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association.
GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP INCLUDES:
• Observing and supporting the rules of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association
• Following the rules and the intended spirit of the rules
• Placing fairness first when either competing or organizing an intercollegiate competition
• Taking personal responsibility for one’s own behavior
• Showing civility toward competitors, coaches, and all officials
• Commending good efforts made by team members
• Being a gracious winner and accepting defeat gracefully
